What to expect
Kampi village, about 15 kilometres north of Kratie town, is Cambodia’s best-known viewpoint for the Mekong’s Irrawaddy dolphins. Local boats travel slowly into the dolphin pool, where patient visitors may see rounded backs and blowholes break the river surface. Late afternoon is often recommended, though sightings are never guaranteed.
Use the authorized Kampi boat cooperative, keep voices and engines low, and never ask a driver to chase, surround or approach dolphins closely. The Mekong Dolphin Protection and Management Zone remains actively patrolled, and community tourism helps connect local livelihoods with conservation.
