Overview: A practical introduction to Ratanakiri’s volcanic landscape and Indigenous highland communities, with routes adjusted for the season.

Day 1: Arrive in Banlung after the long overland journey. Rest, visit the market and arrange a community-authorised guide for the following days.

Day 2: Spend the morning at Yeak Laom, walking the forest circuit and following community rules for swimming and sacred areas. Continue to one nearby waterfall if road conditions permit.

Day 3: Take a guided countryside route to Ka Chanh, Katieng or Cha Ong waterfall and a community enterprise or village that has agreed to receive visitors. Avoid intrusive photography and uninvited entry to sacred places.

Day 4: Choose a short nature walk, local craft visit or an additional lake before departure. Longer Virachey National Park treks require extra days, permits, guides and expedition preparation.

Practical planning: November to February generally offers easier roads. In the wet season, laterite tracks may be impassable. Carry cash, drinking water and basic medical supplies, and confirm community permissions.
