What to expect

28 November 2026 marks the eighth anniversary of Lkhon Khol Wat Svay Andet’s inscription on UNESCO’s List of Intangible Cultural Heritage in Need of Urgent Safeguarding. The tradition is maintained by the community surrounding Wat Svay Andet in Kandal Province, east of Phnom Penh.

Male performers wear masks and enact episodes from the Reamker with traditional music and melodic recitation. The theatre also serves ritual purposes, including prayers for rain, protection and community prosperity. This listing records the verified heritage anniversary; no separate public programme has been announced.
